Questions for Reflection:
1. Why did Samuel initially think Eliab was the person God would choose (verse 6)? How does this compare with what happened in 1 Samuel 10:23-24?
2. If you were one of David’s brothers, how would you feel when you were passed over in favor of David?
3. Most people spend hours each week maintaining and caring for their outward appearance. How does this compare to the amount of time and energy that we put into developing and sharpening our inward being? What can we do to make our inner being more pleasing and attractive to God?
4. How do you feel when you are surprised by God? How does it make you feel when you realize that God has chosen you? What inner qualities of the heart do you think God has seen in the people around you? As you reflect on your answers to these questions, are you surprised? Encouraged?
