Mark 15:33–39 – “Was Crucified” – J. P. Kang
Text and Questions:
Mark 15
33 When it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.
Question: How do you feel in the darkness? How do you feel when you open your eyes and can’t see where you are?
34 At three o’clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
Question: Have you ever felt abandoned/deserted/rejected by another person, perhaps a parent, a partner, or a friend?
35 When some of the bystanders heard it, they said, “Listen, he is calling for Elijah.” 36 And someone ran, filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.”
Question: How often do we think we understand Jesus clearly but, like the bystanders, are actually hearing something else?
37 Then Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last.
Question: How do you experience God through your eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin?
Question: What is your response to hearing and sensing the life leave Jesus’s broken body? What do you feel?
38 And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.
Question: Where do you feel the Spirit moving/blowing in your life?
39 Now when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was God’s Son!”
Bonus Question: Who do you say Jesus of Nazareth is?
